Essays from Rev. Dr. Ken Schurb: Mission and Foundation

The featured essayist for the convention was Rev. Dr. Ken Schurb, who spoke on the convention theme: “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11 ESV).

Rev. Schurb focused on the importance of the Good News of Jesus—the promise of forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation for all on account of Christ—as the Church’s foundation. That foundation of God’s promise to all means that the Church is characterized by mission to all, a mission based always and solely on the promise of salvation received through the Word of God and the Means of Grace. Rev. Schurb encouraged us to stand firm on the foundation of God’s promise as it powers our mission to all. Rev. Schurb will elaborate on the how of that mission in his essay today.

Building on his essay from Friday, Rev. Dr. Ken Schurb elaborated on how the Church can go about its mission today.

One aspect of mission is our synodwide effort to plant new churches. Rev. Schurb listed some benefits and encouraged everyone to support church planters in their own way, even if you yourself are not called to plant a church.

Another aspect of mission is service to neighbor, which is not done primarily through politics but through the Church’s service of loving our neighbor as a witness to Christ. In a time of individuality, the Church is countercultural as it embodies Christlike love and proclaims the Gospel. “Don’t be afraid to be spiritual with your friends, family, and neighbors!” Schurb exhorted.

Finally, Rev. Schurb offered these practical measures for mission during COVID and post COVID times:

1. Acknowledge death and highlight the resurrection. Take this natural opportunity to discuss faith questions, especially the hope we have in Jesus.

2. Go out of your way to serve and be hospitable to local people as a witness to the Gospel.

3. Continue posting church services online, but make sure to connect with those watching online or reaching out to serve them further with the Word.
